Charleston (SC) Fishing Report – Updated April 28

  • by Jay

Captain Michael Bruner of Fins and Flies Charters (843-860-6536) reports that conditions have made fishing difficult at times recently, and even though temperatures have been pleasant strong winds have kept anglers in protected waters and particularly the creeks.

A few weeks ago redfish were still in the remnants of their big winter schools, but they have now mostly broken out of those schools.  Fish have been caught on both the rising and falling tide, and it has been really a matter more of where/ how anglers want to fish than either tide being superior.  On lower stages of the tide Michael reports that redfish have been chasing baby shrimp in the creeks, and they can also be found around structure.  On higher stages they are getting up in the grass as well as sunning at the top of the water column.  Fly-fishing has been pretty good.

In other inshore news Haddrell’s Point (843-881-3644) reports that the large trout are being caught in good numbers on live baits as well as Trout Tricks fished around creek mouths and shell rakes in 3-10 feet of water.  Large bull reds are also showing up in solid numbers around the jetties and grillage.  They are being caught on chunks of mullet and blue crabs.

Offshore, Haddrell’s Point reports that at the nearshore reefs (and jetties) sheepshead are biting very well on fiddler crabs and sand fleas.  Great reports of dolphin are coming in as well as very strong numbers of blackfin tuna.  Dolphin and blackfin are being caught in 150-450 feet of water on cedar plugs and skirted ballyhoo.  Some wahoo are also being caught along the ledge on Yo-Zuri Bonita.  A large blue marlin was also caught and released this week.
