We'd be lying if we said we expected the catch of the day a couple of days before Christmas to be flathead catfish, but that's exactly what makes this catch so special. Guide Jerry Kotal with Jerry Kotal’s Fishing Guide Service (706-988-0860) reports that he has been fishing holes in the timber on the main lake at Lake Russell, and he marked a pod of 8-10 big flathead catfish that were in 47 feet of water feeding on a school of white perch. He managed to get bait down to them and within ten minutes caught the 32-pound fish and 21-pounder pictured below. We had always heard that flatheads became semi-dormant in the colder months, but with temperatures still in the mid-50s that obviously isn't the case now. Thank you Jerry!
