The Lake Murray catfish spawn seems to be getting underway for blues and perhaps channel catfish, but Captain William Attaway with Slick Willie’s Guide Service (803-924-0857) reports that the flatheads are on a pre-spawn feeding binge. Often you need live bait to target them, but he caught a big fish in the 20s and the even bigger 47-pound flathead pictured below on cut bait. The fish were shallow up the rivers and he was surprised to catch them in open water with dead fish instead of around some sort of structure with live bait. Thanks for sharing, Captain!
