A recurring theme from almost all lake reports in the past two weeks is that bream fishing is excellent throughout South Carolina. Bream and shellcracker are being caught both on the beds, and scattered around the shoreline orienting to cover such as logs, weeds, rocks, and brush. The fish are primarily in shallow water, but some beds on clear lakes may be deeper.
Everyone I’ve talked with reports the best tactic is to work around the shoreline, casting to shallow water cover, and also fishing shallow pockets or coves with gravel or sandy bottoms for beds. When you catch a big male bream, stop and fish the area thoroughly, you may be in, or near, a bream bed. Crickets or worms will produce, and worms seem to entice shellcrackers better, but crickets usually produce fast action on bream.
Pictured below is my granddaughter, Anneslee Seiders, with a big bream caught today on Lake Wateree.
