Five years ago Captain Tuck Scott with Building Anglers (843-271-5406) would have been very, very surprised to catch a cobia in August in the Broad River, nonetheless a fish over 10 pounds that was only a few inches away from "legal" size. (They would not have kept it regardless). But over the last few years they have learned that particularly smaller fish will spend all summer there, or perhaps they are evolving to stay longer.
With extremely poor visibility Captain Tuck spotted only the wake from this fish, not 50 yards from the bridge, and handed a client a ten-weight fly rod. Even after a well-placed cast with a large, flashy fly in the muddy conditions they never saw the fish as it took it - but after an impressive fight the cobia came to the boat. The fish came about three hours into theincoming tide when the current was ripping. Thanks Tuck!
