8/18 Catch of the Day - McClellanville Saltwater Cat (and Beaufort Redfish)

  • by Jay

While the catch of the day is usually a species considered desirable, it doesn't have to be.  Sometimes it can just be something unusual - or even weird.  Captain Addison Rupert (843-557-3476) with Lowcountry Outdoor Adventures was fishing in McClellanville for tarpon and caught this rare (to this area) gaftopsail catfish.  While they have venomous spines that can be extremely painful they are technically edible, but to the author's knowledge not many people mess with them.  Captain Addison was glad to get this fish back in the water.

Meanwhile, just to remind everyone that more glamorous species are still being caught, here's a great photo from Captain Patrick Kelly with Boogieman Fishing Charters (843-962-3503) of a Beaufort redfish caught on live finger mullet.

If you have a fish (or a bunch of of fish) you'd like to submit for Catch of the Day, email jay@usfishingreport.com.
