9/3 Catch of the Day - Edisto Island Tarpon

  • by Jay

Under the right circumstances, the catch of the day doesn't have to be a catch at all.  Today was one of those days, and Edisto Island's Captain Ron Davis, Jr. (843-513-0143) reports that he witnessed literally hundreds of tarpon feeding in a half-mile area at the mouth of the South Edisto River on the incoming tide.  They were exploding on schools of 12-15 inch mullet coming down the muddy side of the river following nutrients, with the line of mullet itself a couple of miles long, and at one point he saw 50 plus tarpon jumping out of the water at the same time.  They ranged from 20-30 pounds to well over 100, and the sight of so many big fish jumping after several pound mullet that could themselves leap 3-5 feet out of the water was a sight to behold.  While Ron didn't have the tackle or bait to catch them (they were catching reds and trout on his charter), just watching them was itself an adventure.  Thanks for sharing, Ron.

(No idea how much longer they will be there, but for now if you are in the Lowcountry the South Edisto is the spot for tarpon).
