9/9 Catch of the Day - Beaufort Sheepshead

  • by Jay

It's fairly common to catch redfish tailing at high tide as they feed on fiddler crabs in the warmer months, and it's not uncommon to also see sheepshead tailing on the short grass flats.  But catching them is a rare thing, and Captain Tuck Scott with Building Anglers (843-271-5406) notes that they are actually eating mussels instead of fiddler crabs.  Still, every now and then they manage to get one, and usually they are beauties like the fish Captain Tuck is pictured with below.  The key is fishing very slowly with a fly that looks remotely like a mussel - think about how fast a mussel moves! - and some luck.
