Clark's Hill Fishing Reports
Lake Greenwood is located near the towns of Greenwood and Ninety Six, about an hour to the northwest of Columbia and around forty-five minutes to the southeast of Greenville. The waters of the Saluda and Reedy Rivers come from the northwest and feed into Lake Greenwood, which was created between 1935 and 1940 with the construction of Buzzard’s Roost Dam.
Lake Greenwood has 212 miles of shoreline and 11,400 surface acres of water, and today it is owned by Greenwood County. A relatively shallow lake, Lake Greenwood averages 18 feet deep and is 60 feet deep at its deepest point. The Greenwood County Lake Management Department controls permitting, camping, upkeep and maintenance on the lake, and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources helps to manage the fishery resource.
Fishermen target Lake Greenwood’s healthy populations of largemouth and now spotted bass, black and white crappie, bream and catfish, and channel and flathead catfish. DNR also stocks striped bass in the lake, although not in the quantities which they put into Lake Murray, Clarks Hill and other major striper fisheries. White bass are also present in Greenwood, although they are increasingly being displaced by the white perch population. The most significant forage fish on Lake Greenwood are threadfin and gizzard shad. Read More
It’s a great time to be on the water around Edisto Island, and Captain Ron Davis, Jr. (803-513-0143) reports that fishing in the area is at its absolute peak right now. This has been an extremely mild autumn, and with air temperatures barely having dipped the water is staying warm and prolonging a very strong […]
For a new feature series we are speaking with local and national professional bass anglers about baits that they consider indispensable in the upcoming month – either generally or on specific lakes. For the first article I interviewed FLW Tour Pro Matt Arey of Shelby, NC, a 9-time FLW Championship Qualifier and winner of the […]
While the bite for striper and hybrids on Lake Hartwell has gotten really good, the fish still haven’t made a huge move up the rivers. Guide Chip Hamilton (864-304-9011) reports that the fish usually make the run sometime in November, but with water temperatures still hovering in the low 60s they haven’t made the move […]
A few weeks ago Guide Brad Fowler of Pendleton reported that if you wanted to catch a bunch of bass Lake Keowee was a good place to do it, and over the last few weeks he says that the bite has only gotten better. On a recent trip Brad caught fish from 20 feet out […]
Water continues to pour into the Santee Cooper lakes, and despite the power company releasing water through all three discharge sites Lake Marion is at 76.6 and Lake Moultrie is at 75.1, both only a few inches below full pool. At the same time that the lakes are experiencing massive inflows, Captain Jim Glenn (843-825-4239) reports […]
Inshore fishing is hot in the Beaufort area, and it’s about to get even better! Bay Street Outfitters (843-524-5250) in Beaufort reports that right now is a special time, because even though it’s mid-November inshore water temperatures are still around 73 degrees – meaning that redfish can still be found tailing in the grass. At the […]
A few weeks ago Lake World (803-957-6548) reported that they had never seen a fishery change as much as quickly as Lake Murray striper fishing did after the October floods, and with another significant round of rain it should be no surprise that they have seen another first. Guide Richard Hall at Lake World says […]
What a difference another deluge of rain makes! In his most recent report Captain Rodger Taylor (803-517-7828) advised that the catfish were hanging out around deep ledges in a typical fall pattern and feeding very well, while the white perch fishing was even better. Perch were grouped up in the creeks about 25 feet deep and […]
It won’t last forever, but peak season for bull red drum in the Charleston area is here. Captain Tucker Blythe of Grey Ghost Charters (843-670-8629) reports that in the inlets, in the surf and around the jetties big drum are fattening up before they go offshore, and they are chomping on a variety of baitfish. […]
While there don’t appear to have been any 12-pound flounder caught again in the last week in the Grand Strand area, inshore fishing around Murrells Inlet continues to be very strong. Perry’s Bait Tackle (843-651-2895) in Murrells Inlet reports that flounder are still being caught drifting live mullet and mud minnows as well as casting […]
Everyone knows that the Santee Cooper system has a history of producing big fish, whether largemouth bass (co-state record), catfish (3 state records and one world record), crappie (state record black crappie), bream (state record shellcracker), or striped bass– among other species. However, a 3-pound crappie is a big crappie anywhere, and catching more than […]
The “big four” inshore species – redfish, trout, flounder and black drum – are all biting very well in the Georgetown area, according to Guide Kevin “Stump” Grant of Pawley’s Island Guide Service (843-833-4477). It’s not unusual for anglers to catch all four species on a single trip, and in fact it’s common for all […]
A couple of weeks ago Captain Chris Simpson (864-992-2352) reported that Lake Greenwood was starting to calm down after the flood, and the catfish bite was beginning to improve. Drifting with herring and gizzard shad was starting to work pretty well, and the fish were feeding most actively in the 10-25 foot range. Main lake points […]
In his last Lake Monticello update tournament bass fisherman Andy Wicker reported that the jigging spoon bite was starting to come on. It has now arrived, and in Andy’s opinion the best jigging spoon fishing of the year will be found between now and December. While a lot of people will be fishing spoons in […]
The endless rain has made fishing difficult, but in the last week or two Clarks Hill guides have managed to squeeze in some trips during dry spells. Guide William Sasser (864-333-2000) reports that striped bass have made their seasonal move into the backs of creeks, and his boat is catching them on free-lines and planer […]
Captain Rodger Taylor (803-517-7828) had seen that the catfish bite on Lake Wateree on was good, but after his most recent trips this past weekend he says it is time to upgrade the bite to “very good” – particularly when some wind is blowing. Fish in the 8-20 pound range are feeding very well, and there […]
Last weekend tournament angler and guide Brad Fowler fished the ABA National Championship on Lake Hartwell and finished in fourth place in the roughly 300-boat field. Most people would have been thrilled. However, when we spoke I could tell that – instead of being satisfied at having won several thousand dollars and come out so […]
For the first installment of a new series I interviewed tournament bass angler Dearal Rodgers with a simple question – what three baits does he have to have tied on to fish Lake Wateree in November? Fresh off his fourth place finish in the BFL Regional on Lake Wateree last weekend, I thought people would […]
The South Carolina coast has been experiencing some extremely high tides this week, but despite these conditions the fishing in the Little River area has been very good. In fact, Captain Patrick Smiley (843-361-7445) believes that right now is the best fishing time of the year. Water temperatures are in the mid- to lower-60s, and […]

Seasonal changes are underway on Lake Wateree, and veteran tournament angler Will Hinson reports that crappie are starting to migrate up the lake towards the river run. A lot of fish are in the mid-lake area around the State Park – where a recent tournament was won – and there are already fish setting up […]
Last week Captain Dan “Fishin’ Coach” Utley (843-368-2126) reported that fishing for redfish had been pretty tough on recent trips, but anglers on his boat must have started “holding their mouths right” since then because on recent trips they have had some nice catches. On the dropping tide Coach has found cooperative redfish on the main […]

Lake Jocassee bass are making a seasonal move into the rivers following baitfish, and they are feeding up and biting well. Guide Rob McComas (828-674-5041) reports that right now fish are about half the way up the rivers, but as the season progresses they will get further and further back until temperatures drop enough that […]
